Located along the Takase River, this residence stands in the Kiyamachi district, the heart of Kyoto’s vibrant commercial area. During the design process, we made every effort to create a tranquil environment as a luxury residence that reflects Kyoto’s refined sense of beauty and high-quality living—despite being situated in the lively center of the city.

We incorporated Kyo-machiya concept into our project by creating a secluded world that is shielded from the outside environment. A discreet exterior wall separates the residence from the bustling surroundings. Passing through the gate, residents are welcomed by a water-featured passageway that leads to an inner garden, reflecting the ambiance of the nearby Takase River and creating a peaceful entrance space. From the higher-level units, residents can enjoy panoramic views of Kyoto’s iconic “Five Mountains” (Gozan), offering a unique experience of life in Kyoto. Through these design elements, we hope residents can fully immerse themselves in the beauty of nature as it changes with the seasons, and in the timeless history of Kyoto.

Scope: architectural design

Instead of rebuilding and maximizing the land plot, this project presented a re-examination of the relationship between the owner’s needs and site context by adopting to reconstruct the existing building instead. The result is a low and intimate dwelling that assimilates with the peaceful neighborhood, with the old and new elements of the house expressed in a clear and elegant architectural language.

Scope: Assisted in the design and construction of the house.

Situated in a busy intersection, privacy was a key consideration for the owners. The house was designed to be a monolithic structure with 10m high off-form concrete walls on all 4 sides and is intended to be an inward-looking oasis. In order to mitigate the harshness on its surrounding, the concrete walls were uniquely crafted such that every wall panel has a custom cnc-ed formwork that aggregated in a mesmerizing, patterned façade.

Scope: Assisted in the design and construction of the house.

The event aims to re-route visitors of Little India away from its usual attractions to encourage exploration of the whole district. As such, multiple pavilions and installations were set up across the site to attract visitors to take a detour. Scaffolding was the choice of material for the pavilions, since it can be easily dismantled and does not damage the site. More importantly. It serves as an ode to the migrant workers on site and to present a new perspective of the utlitarian material to the public.

Scope: Spearheaded the design and construction of various scaffolding pavilions for the event. Assisted in the curation and project management of the event.

Inspired by labanotation, the sculpture aims to record the colourful happenings within the Katong district through 3D tessellations in abstract clusters. These clusters were then arranged in a spiral, striking a semblance to a torrential wave that pays homage to Katong’s eccentric vitality and its oceanic history. In response to i12 Katong Mall’s environmental pledge, the entire sculpture was constructed out of paper and can be dismantled into small sculptures to be repurposed elsewhere, allowing the Katong spirit to be inherited.
